[Blog Post in Idleness]

I was going over the thought over poetry last week. I read some poems, and also wrote something. - I recalled I used to spend much time on reading and writing, and during my 20s I had a call from an editor of a publisher. We didn't meet just because over the telephone he mentioned "The Wild Geese" written by Ogai Mori and also because I had gained much weight and I was thinking I had to eat more greens (which doesn't make any sense...) I think that is how I spent my late 20s.... I don't remember most of the people I met around that time... I was using a TOSHIBA word processor and I didn't know anything about website or e-mails. Fifteen years have passed since then, I am currently using a TOSHIBA computer. It is funny when I start thinking about that. In my 20s, the world looked like the stories written by Rampo Edogawa. There were more secrets in both the society and individuals. Words coming from an individual’s mouth sounded differently. How differently did it sound to me? It is like a difference between LED lights and fluorescent lights. More things that have happened in society used to be unrevealed. More things that were covered up were not uncovered. Information did not spread this fast across the border. Communication with someone abroad was not common. Complaints and accusations against bad or nasty groups or individuals were not to be known, unless your message was sent to a newspaper company or a magazine editor and be published in the media. Only a few people made it happen. You could not give out your voices unless you already have power or influence over society. I wrote stories as my hobby and some appeared in magazines...

One of the editors who was located far away from where I had lived wanted my short story to be printed on their magazine. With his very polite letter I was advised to revise a couple of places in the original. He said some of the words and phrases were not appropriate to be read by the readers I didn’t know. He encouraged me to keep writing. Years later, I published one silly and weird book. Then I made a very little money by writing 2 more books. One was on the mental health for business people, and the other on preparation for natural disasters. - I don't think they helped someone out who had problems with mental conditions or had a hard time when a disaster happened. – Information technology is amazing. The speed of progress should be not normal if I jumped over here from 1980s.

I imagine innocent mistakes and errors must have been more tolerable than nowadays. They must have had less impact. – However in the 21st century, with advanced technology and potential risks around us, things that might have been thought less of in the past (such as a poor translation of documents or miscommunications) now contain potential risks, and impacts can be huge and serious.

– As a supervisor of technical translation and bilingual system engineer (including CATIA operations), the importance and criticality of translation have become bigger than when I worked in Japan as a bilingual tech supporter. – If this situation is overlooked, I don’t have a clue what would happen next.

[Brief Introduction to CATIA FEA] CATIA FEA

Here is a very good tutorial video uploaded on YouTube by a gentleman, named Ionut Ghionea. I would like to briefly explain (using this very cool video) what can be done with CATIA in order to perform FEA analysis. Roughly speaking, in CATIA V5, FEA can be done by taking the following 3 steps.

     1. Set up Analysis Conditions (Apply material, add clamps, and apply force)
     2. Perform Calculation
     3. Display Calculated Analysis Results with Mesh (Deformation, Von Mises, Principal Stress, Displacement, etc.)

1. Set up Analysis Conditions
00:20
A material (Steel, in this video) has been applied to the solid, using the [Apply Material] command.

00:33
Right-click [Steel] in the spec tree to go to [Properties], and change the material attributes.

00:47
The workbench has been switched to GSA (Generative Structural Analysis), where analysis work (settings, calculation, display of results) will be performed.

00:52
The [Clamp] icon is clicked in order to specify the clamping areas. (The clamped areas have been shown with the red fork-like shapes. (Multiple faces can be selected.))

01:11
The [Distributed Force] command had been applied. This will specify the applying force to the geometry. 1 face has been selected, and at [1:26] the force has been specified. (-150N in the X axis direction, 0N in the Y and Z directions) The unit can be changed to Mpa (instead of N (Newton)) if necessary. The directions to apply forces, by the way, does not necessarily have to be in the X, Y, or Z direction.

01:43
[OCTREE Tetrahedron] is clicked in the spec tree. The window opens to let you modify the mesh information, including the mesh size, the sag (tesselation) value. - In solid geometries created in PartDesign workbench, meshes will be created automatically when you enter the GSA workbench. When working with surfaces (created in GSD), meshes need to be created manually in another workbench, called the [Advanced Meshing Tool] workbench. - In this video, surface meshing process is not introduced.

2. Perform Calculation
01:57
The [Compute] icon is clicked, in order to calculate the analysis with the settings that have been given.

3. Display Calculated Analysis Results
02:08
The [Deformation] icon is clicked to show the computed result with the mesh structure. Deformed shape is displayed in the 3D area.

02:13
The [Animate] icon is clicked to show the animated result. - Note this animation is not the movement based on the time. It only shows how the deformed geometry looks like when the displacement values are divided by the [Steps Number] that has been set by a user.

02:28
The [Von Mises] command is clicked, to dislay the result of the Von Mises stress analysis result. The color scale can be found at the right top in the 3D area when the [Von Mises] icon is clicked. - The more stressed, the more the area becomes closer to red.

03:09
The [Extrema] icon is clicked to show the maximum value in Von Mises representation. - This command detects the minimum and maximum values of both global extrema and local extrema.

03:42
The [Displacement] icon is clicked to show the analysis result by the displacement. Getting closer to the colored area, you will know the displacement values for nodes, represented by colored arrows. The farther the node has been displaced, the more close to red the arrow will be colored.

[Closing]
I currently don't work with FEA but back in Japan (although it was only a short period of time while I was preparing to move here) I was teaching FEA for the engineers in a CATIA class. - While teaching about it, I came to realize that many of the issues and questions on FEA would involve analysis setting issues, meshing problems, or computation error issues. - I would like to learn more about FEA, in order to have more opportunities in that field some day.

--- ENGLISH ----

One of my coworkers asked me if I wanted to go to this year's auto show together. He said he had 1 extra ticket. I said, "Sure!" I had wanted to go to the auto show ever since I had moved to Michigan about a year and a half before. - I couldn't even go to the previous year's auto show partly because of the snow on that day, and partly because of my impression toward Detroit that I had heard of up until that day. At the same time, as a beginner driver, I didn't want to pressure myself to go to a place I didn't really know of, especially when it was a cold and snowy holiday. I'd rather sleep longer and stay warm at home.

This year, unfortunately, was also a cold and snowy day. The coworker was more worried about what his wife would have to say to him than the condition of the road on that day.

He came to my place at 7:30 am to pick me up. My 15-year-old daughter also woke up early on that day. She said she wanted to go with us. - She and I hopped into his car.

Getting to Detroit, we noticed that the roads were covered with snow and there was nobody walking outside. My daughter raised her voice, saying, "Wow, smoke is coming here and there from the ground! It's a horror show!" - Thanks to my coworker, we were able to get to the designated location a little before the show was open. We had some meal and had some talks in three.

My 15-year-old asked my coworker questions sometimes. "Which automaker is the most famous in the world? How do we know that?"

My coworker answered to these childish question she had asked. "Mmm, that's a great question... I want to say it's our company but sometimes it might not be true depending on the location... I think you would be able to know the most famous automaker by how large an area they are allowed to share in an exhibition like this."

"Mmm, I see... Makes sense," my daughter said.

I bought some gifts for my wife, who was waiting for us at home.

My coworker's wife was staying home with a 3-year-old. I had wished we all could get together, but it didn't become. He said his kid might not behave herself and go anywhere.

We went to a Mexican restaurant after we came back to Ann Arbor. It was still snowy and the roads were slippery. I said to him, "Please say hi to your wife, and tell her it was not snowy at all in Detroit." - My daughter and I thanked him for the ride.

It was a great day, I thought. My daughter said it was very fun. She said she definitely wanted to go back soon.

[Translation of Poems by Akiko Yosano]

This time I want to introduce this Japanese female poet, Yosano Akiko (1878 - 1942), from a bilingual point of view.

Reference Link- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akiko_Yosano

She was a poet who composed tanka poems. For those of you who don't know what tanka is, a genre of classical Japanese poetry and one of the major genres of Japanese literature. It is quite similar to Haiku, comprised with 5-7-5 syllables.

Translation of tanka poems (短歌) has been a big challenge for me. It is a serious fun at the same time, just like looking for cat toys in a pet shop.... English speakers, regardless of whether they are living in Japan or not, may have no clue as to why this type of poetry is that important. Poems composed and recited in the emperor’s house in the new-year season have traditionally taken this form.

Haiku, with 5-7-5 syllables, is a shorter version of tanka, and it is well-known even in non-Japanese speaking communities. But tanka, comprised of 5-7-5-7-7 syllables, doesn't seem to be that popular, mostly because it is difficult to translate it into English.

Here is one of the most famous tanka poems of all time, introduced in high school Japanese textbooks.

[ORIGINAL]

I don’t think I can translate it so well. At this moment, I need to give up with the rimes and rhythms that share the huge part of how this type of poetry can be appreciated.

[ENGLISH]
this girl has just tuned twenty... her black hair coming through the comb smoothly... as if showing off she is in her prime... i love seeing that...

I feel writing it in a single line without periods would be closer to how I understand it in Japanese.

Here is another poem I would like to introduce today. This poems was addressed to her younger brother and was published in Myōjō, a literary magazine, during the height of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). This poem became extremely controversial since it appeared to be against “patriotism”.

[ORIGINAL]

[ENGLISH]
Oh, my little brother, I weep for you
“Thou shalt not die”
Ever since you were born as the youngest kid
Our parents have loved you so much
Did they teach you to end up getting hold of a blade in your hand
To kill others?
Did they raise you until the age twenty-four
Just to kill others and get killed yourself?

The poem goes on to be closed with this stanza.

[ORIGINAL]

[ENGLISH]
Have you forgotten you got a wife of your own? Did you stop caring about her?
She weeps in the shade of the shop-curtain at your home
Think of how this young lady must always feel
Within ten months after the marriage, she had to have you away
Remember you are no longer living only on your own
Ah, I have no one else to ask of this
“Thou shalt not die”

================================

[ORIGINAL]

[ENGLISH]
this girl has just tuned twenty... her black hair coming through the comb smoothly... as if showing off she is in her prime... i love seeing that...

[Mistranslation and the Rumors]

First of all, please let me say I don't have an intention of going into this controversial political issue regarding the Yasukuni Shrine or anything of that sort. That's none of my business. I am not even keen on that.

As a translator, however, I thought I had to write this post to mention how the English statement from the U.S. government has been misinterpreted by a Japanese upper house person without the good knowledge of the English language.  - He should have called or e-mailed me in advance.

Here is the Mr. Masahisa Sato's post.
https://www.facebook.com/masahisa.sato.775/posts/557317064363150

Here is the news article
http://www.huffingtonpost.jp/2013/12/29/masahisa-sato-yasukuni_n_4514036.html

Statement on Prime Minister Abe's December 26 Visit to Yasukuni Shrine
http://japan.usembassy.gov/e/p/tp-20131226-01.html

Following is an excerpt from the post of the Japanese upper house member.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

disappointed

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is a simple mistake that he treated and disucussed "disappoint" and "regret" on the same platform when trying to interpret that official statement from the U.S. government.

I start considering why he had to compare "regret" to “disappoint" and say which word is a stronger statement. He must have thought "disappoint" had to be translated as "遺憾である" which is considered less than “失望している”.

“遺憾である”, by the way, is a cliché often used by politicians or top level leaders in such oocasion where he or she was asked to comment on any accident or unfortunate event that has occurred in his or her company (or organization). It can be translated as “I feel sorry to hear that” in most cases.  Mr. Sato says the statement “disappointment” from the U.S. government has to be translated more lightly than the “regret” (遺憾である, I feel sorry to hear that).

'残念である' he used should have to be “I feel sorry to hear that” in English.
“失望” (disappointment) that Mr. Sato claims it is a wrong translation is actually a correct translation. – Once again, this is NOT a political point of view. It is just a translation issue I want to speak about here. I almost don’t know anything about the shrine issue, and I am not interested in it. I don’t care if the prime minister visits there, or people like that or not.

Mr. Sato writes that he feels "disappoint" is meant to have been used lightly - even lighter than "regret" and the statement should be interpreted as a general statement to take the balance, and should not be taken as a strong statement.

His intention of the post is that he was dissatisfied with the mass media has deliberately selected only a part of it with a mistranslation, and has been brought to the attention of the Japanese citizens in order to put them into an anxiety or confusion.

Looking into his Facebook page, he has earned 400 likes and a huge number of comments, where some state, “They cannot tolerate what the mass media's been doing” or “America has no right to say this to Japan because they are even worse. They dropped atomic bombs.” Only a few posted his (Mr. Sato's) interpretation was completely wrong, but I don't think these would bring the people's attention. Majority of the comments are hysterical ones, accusing the wicked intention of the mass media. - Verily, verily, studying languages is not easy.

Observing them all - the mass media, the politicians, and the Japanese-speaking people on the internet – something is wrong in every one of them. People get furious from what they have heard from the misinterpretation/ mistranslation.

There is a sentiment among the Japanese in general that they want to look down on or detest Chinese or Koreans by focusing on the news or topics mentioning these non-Japanese Asians’ mischiefs or poor behaviors. My concern is they appear to lift themselves up by finding fault of others, and do not look at themselves. I know, as an individual, this tendency is what every one of us has in common, regardless of where we live on this planet. But looking into SNS or comments on Yahoo Japan news, I am always reminded of the sentiment spreading among the people before the World War II broke out.

Translation should be more important. I know all of the Japanese go schools and study English for years and years. Some of them talk much about the English language they have studied. The problem, however, is sometimes they are completely wrong, including the political post from Mr. Sato.

I have just remembered what I was talking about with someone on the road. He came from Japan, who wanted to pee at the corner of on a sidewalk. He had been talking badly about other non-Japanese Asians because they talk loudly or they don’t use bathrooms nicely. Changing that subject, I started to explain that nobody here do not want to pee outside, even though we Japanese don’t hesitate to pee at a building, walls, or poles while walking outside. He became upset and said cynically, “Does that mean Americans don’t pee at all?! Are you saying they are greater and more cool-looking people than the Japanese? Don’t be fantasized. We are all same human beings!”

Even with this episode, I am still taking about translation issues. - I don’t care about politics but I do care about translation issues.

Orlando is a city in the U.S. state of Florida and a popular tourist destination." Orlando's climate has characteristics of a tropical climate, but is situated on the southern fringe of the
humid subtropical climate zone, and on the border of USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9B and 10A."

EPCOT

Amazing thing about Disney shows is every action they take is so perfect and beautiful. Their singing is great and impressive with full of power and energy."

[Thanksgiving 2013]
